CENTRE OF GRAVITY (CoG)

One of the most fundamental aspects of planning any heavy lift operation is the calculation of the centre of gravity (CoG) relative to lift, support or restraint points.

The centre of gravity may be thought of as a hypothetical point in space within the geometric envelope of an item that the mass of the body can be thought to be acting.

The calculation of the CoG for any item that you are handling allows you to understand the distribution of forces into lifting slings, load on transport trailers and the distribution of load into sea fastenings or deck supports.
